An All-Star Cast for DreamWorks

Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Alec Baldwin and Isla Fisher will voice the lead roles in DreamWorks Animation's 3D epic "Rise of the Guardians."

Peter Ramsey is directing the pic based on "The Guardians of Childhood," an upcoming series of children's books by William Joyce, who will co-direct.

Guillermo del Toro and Michael Siegel are exec producing, while Christina Steinberg and Nancy Bernstein will serve as producers.

Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire wrote the screenplay, which follows a group of heroic childhood legends, each with extraordinary abilities. When Pitch (Law), an evil spirit akin to the boogeyman, lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

Project was originally announced in December 2009, with Leonardo DiCaprio voicing Jack Frost, a role Pine will be taking over. He'll be joined by Jackman's Bunnymund (the Easter Bunny), Baldwin's North (Santa Claus) and Fisher's Tooth (the Tooth Fairy).

"It's a thrill to be working with such an all-star team of actors and filmmakers," Bill Damaschke, DWA's chief creative officer, said in a statement to Variety. "When we bring Bill Joyce's imaginative vision to the screen in 2012, audiences will experience an incredible story with a truly epic sense of adventure."

DWA will release the film on Nov. 21, 2012.

Tip of the Day

Ditch your Cable
"Opt for Netflix, Hulu and even Redbox if you have too. I noticed my cable bill was more than $160 per month. That would probably be okay if I actually watched tv, but since I work all day and normally unwind with a movie at night, the cable expense was unnecessary. Instead I opted for Netflix, which gives me access to tons of movies for just $9.99 per month. I also added a $7.99 Hulu subscription so I wouldn’t miss all the great TV shows I love like House, Modern Family, and Undercover Boss. I have more than enough to watch, without the headache of a massive cable bill each month."

Saying Yes To The Universe

Making The Decision
Saying Yes To The Universe

The hardest thing about saying yes to the universe is that it means accepting everything life puts in front of us. Most of us have a habit of going through our days saying no to the things we don’t like and yes to the things we do, and yet, everything we encounter is our life. We may be afraid that if we say yes to the things we don’t like, we will be stuck with them forever, but really, it is only through acknowledging the existence of what’s not working for us that we can begin the process of change. So saying yes doesn’t mean indiscriminately accepting things that don’t work for us. It means conversing with the universe, and starting the conversation with a very powerful word — yes.

When we say yes to the universe, we enter into a state of trust that whatever our situation is, we can work with it. We express confidence in ourselves, and the universe, and we also express a willingness to learn from whatever comes our way, rather than running and hiding when we don’t like what we see. The question we might ask ourselves is what it will take for us to get to the point of saying yes. For some of us, it takes coming up against something we can’t ignore, escape, or deny, and so we are left no choice but to say yes. For others, it just seems a natural progression of events that leads us to making the decision to say yes to life.

The first step to saying yes is realizing that in the end it is so much easier than the alternative. Once we understand this, we can begin examining the moments when we resist what is happening, and experiment with occasionally saying yes instead. It might be scary at first, and even painful at times, but if we continue to say yes to every moment through the process, we will discover the joy of being in a positive conversation with a force much bigger than ourselves.

A Lesson from Diddy

Say what you will about Sean "Diddy" Combs, there is one fact that is undeniable: The man is the baron of brand building. Want proof? Witness the recently reported 552 % brand growth of Cîroc vodka. (Yes, you read correctly: 552%.) The brand's exponential surge is attributed directly to Diddy's involvement. After Diageo—the parent company for the liquor—partnered with him, featured him in several commercials and named him current brand manager and chief marketing officer in 2007, the company saw an extensive jump in sales. Now Ciroc is the second-ranked “ultra-premium” vodka, knocking Belvedere from its place, and was recently named one of America’s Hottest Brands by Advertising Age.

Blackenterprise.com talked with branding expert and reinvention strategist Marshawn Evans to see what small business owners may be able to learn from the hip-hop mogul's promotional prowess and what techniques can be used to propel your company's growth significantly. Here are Evans's need-to-know tips:

Be the face of the brand: Diddy has been the spokesperson and sole face of Cîroc. Doing this, Evans assures, will grow one's business. "If a small business owner can be the face of their brand, then it helps consumers connect with them and then they're more apt to learn about their product and services,” says the entrepreneur. (Think Oprah and Martha Stewart. One small warning: when you're the face of the brand, everything you do, good or bad, may affect the brand as well. Think Oprah and Martha Stewart.)

Cross-promote with lifestyle integration: Cîroc-everything is how Diddy plays the game. He inserts Cîroc messaging in his music and videos (does Chester French's "Ciroc Star" video featuring Diddy, Jadakiss, and Clinton Sparks ring a bell?), television, commercials, nightlife promotions, live event appearances, and, of course, social media sites such as Twitter. It is not uncommon to see consecutive tweets from Diddy about the latest liquor flavor and retweets of drink concoctions made with his beverage of choice. Evans, an alumni of The Apprentice season 4, says if you know how to talk about your product or service, you don't have to be at a networking event to spark a conversation about them. You could be anywhere.

Consistency and repetition is a must: "People don’t buy from you the first time," says Evans. "They have to see the message over and over." Hence, she advises, why shifting your messaging too quickly can hinder the spread of your brand. Brand-loyalty is your ultimate goal and that can only be achieved through direct, balanced communication. Diddy delivers that when promoting the liquor. The Bad Boy Entertainment Worldwide founder's platform integration says"if you want to live a luxurious life like me, do what I'm doing," and consumers internalize it.

Authenticity sells:
It has to be believable. The Combs's connection to the luxury brand seems nothing less than natural. In fact, many people assume he's the liquor's originator. "His advocacy of the product made us see the vodka as an extension of him," adds Evans.

Provide a quality product:
Without a doubt, when it comes to taste and quality, Cîroc is at the top of the list with its extensive distillation process and smooth consumption consistency. The sleek and sexy bottle goes hand-in-hand with the brand and its targeted audience. "If you don’t deliver, you’ve wasted your efforts." It's that simple.

Bonus tip: You must give, to receive: As a small business strategy, you should create partnerships; however, you’re going to have to give up some equity in the form of an ownership interest in your company or your product in order to get them to have buy in your company. Evaluate what the partnership could mean to your business and decide if joining forces and giving up some interest may be worth it in the long run.

A Year Later

Exactly 365 days ago, while standing outside chatting with some friends at the 'uni,' the ground began to rumble. I felt like gelatin inside a bowl. Was there something wrong with me? Why was my equilibrium suddenly off? What the HELL just happened? Turns out I was not the only one to feel it, and unfortunately over 350,000 deaths were a result.

That day was marked by the most destructive earthquake to hit the island of Hispaniola in over 200 years. A year later, I still think about the sites of destruction and the decibels of the screaming and wounded. At this point in my life, I am realizing more and more that 'carpe diem' is the most important aspect of life amongst love. I realize it is not meant to last forever, nor is it even guaranteed to last till tomorrow.

For this simple fact, I ask that you begin to smile more, walk more, talk more, laugh more, read more, learn more, relax more and begin LIVING more.

A few days ago when I was feeling down and out, I began to ponder, 'if I was in the room with a very wise person right now, what would they say to me?'

Then it hit me:

The Importance of Trying New Things (and Old)

Growing up, I made the ugliest faces after biting into grapefruits; the unbecoming flavors left such bitter and tart tastes in my mouth. Consequently, I went through the years shying away from grapefruits, grapefruit juice, grapefruit anything and everything. I did not want to have them in my presence.

Then today happened.

As I took a stroll and glanced over the breakfast foods in my work's commissary, I selected my daily egg whites and tomatoes. Next, as I went for the fruits, I looked over and noticed dozens of halfed grapefruits and cantaloupes. Instantly, my childhood memories came back of how I absolutely hated the taste of grapefruits. I began thinking to myself, 'I have seen several people digging into these everyday - I wonder what the hell is wrong with them.' So I said, ‘why not' and picked one up with the thought, in the back of my mind, that it would probably be thrown away rather quickly.

Something else happened.

I walked over to a fellow co-worker and asked, 'do people add sugar or salt to grapefruit?' Supposedly it's just like cantaloupe - some people add sugar, some people add salt and some people add the flavor of nothingness. After walking back to my desk trying not to spill my water, I began cutting into the grapefruit only to be welcomed by large citrusy squirts to the face and eyes. I grabbed a piece of the fruit along with some of its juice and for the first time in my life I smiled and thought, 'wow, grapefruit is tasty - this is actually pretty good.'

It turns out, it only took a simple retry of something I disliked as a child to know that it would no longer accompany me as an adult. Just because you hated something as a child does not mean you will hate it as you get older, and just because you loved something or someone during your younger days does not mean you will have the same feelings as you get older.

True living is about stepping outside of your comfort zone, taking leaps, being a consistent student of the world and trying new things (and old).

What is something you have been wanting to do for days, months and years? Why haven't you? What is holding you back? Do you have bad childhood memories? If you are scared of something new (and old), don't be - life will expand and love you just as much as you are willing to love it. Life is definitely what you make it. William Jones once said, 'the greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.' He forgot to remind us to eat our daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

This morning happened and I am so happy it did. Here's to trying something new (and old).

P.S. When life gives you grapefruits, grab a spoon and dig in!
